OS X El Capitan App Reviews

Works great in ’07 iMac

My old 2007 iMac runs great with it and 4Gb of RAM. I don’t know if it ever ran this smoothly before. No glitches whatsoever with the instal other than it took 5 hours with our crappy internet service.

The ugliest and useles OS X

When, during the el capitan launch, the most important thing to mention is the mouse pointer getting bigger it’s clear that the OS is absolutely rubbish and their devs just don’t care anymore. The design is meh. they tried to reinvent the wheel and the call it flat design, whatever that is! The result - everything seems washed out and there is no visible improvement. Connecting to an external Apple monitor, the fonts seem pixelated, even with the smooth font option on. The dock design is ugly and the old one seem to better differentiate the app icons. Went back to an old machine with Mavericks and man that design still looks good, better than the current. The OS hangs for me - like something is running awry on main thread - good job, Apple developers! When watching a movie on iTunes, trying to move back and forth by clicking on the progress bar makes the dock pop up on top the movie. The transparency is something that is consuming a lot of energy. Switching it off vastly improved my battery life. Why do Apple thinks is a good idea to waste energy, didn’t they like to show off that they care about environment? Overall is a bad experience and it seems to me that Apple needs to a new direction.

Crashing!

Ever since I have updated my computer to El Capitan, my computer has constantly crashed and shut down. There have not been any other application or downloads that I have that are causing this and my roomate is experiencing the exact same issues as well. Do not update your computer to this software until all of these problems have been resolved. It makes productivity very slow and difficult for school.

Incompatible with Mac CS5 and Win 7, Java issues

This is a 2015 macbook pro running Win 7 with a very old version of java required for access to FDA sites (yes, I have to fight off java’s updates everytime I log on). I also have Adobe CS5 package which requires a legacy java installation. Unable to install this legacy java as the java installation see the java for Win 7. Bottom line is that I had to unstall El Capitan via my restore copy. Let me know when the legacy jave installation function on El Capitan is improved so it doesn’t see the Win version.

It won’t even download

So I’m having trouble with my macbook pro - it’s only about 2 years old and the cursor keeps freezing up. All I can do is force a shutdown, as I suddenly am unable to click or type anything. So I figured I should update my Yosemite to El Capitan. But lo! I can’t even get the app to download. Sigh.

So far, so good

I wanted to give the El Capitan upgrade 4.5 stars because I had an issue with Safari immediately after the installation was complete. Safari kept freezing as soon as I tried to visit any website. I looked up the issue and saw that it could be resolved by deselecting “Safari Suggestions” in the “Smart Search Field” portion under the Search tab in the Preferences section. The freezing immediately stopped and since then I’ve had no issues, which is why I opted for 5 stars instead of 4. To give background on my Mac, I have a 15” Macbook Pro (mid-2012), 4GB Memory. I bought it in December 2012. I’d never upgraded from my original Lion 10.7.5 OS. Up until around July 2015 it ran beautifully, but then I started noticing that it would load media-heavy websites slower than usual and I’d see the spinning wheel more and more. Plus I could no longer upgrade Safari and Youtube, and Twitter defaulted me to some weird text version of the site. I read that upgrading the OS would likely solve these issues, but I saw so many negative reviews that I was scared to do it. Finally, I had enough of it being sluggish and took a chance. Aside from the issue I mentioned above, I’m thrilled with the upgrade! It runs like it did when I first purchased it with no issues on media-heavy sites. I’m still getting used to the features so I can’t report on all the perks, but so far I feel that I’ve lost nothing and gained a computer that runs like new again, which was my primary goal. Everything (USB ports, apps, etc) work like before and all of my files (and even my passwords saved on various websites) were saved (I did back up my files prior to upgrading, just in case). As someone else mentioned, maybe I got lucky. But I wanted to add my 2 cents because it was the recent positive reviews that encouraged me to give it a try. So far, I couldn’t be happier that I did.

Stuck on “Paused"

Tried to download this update a few weeks ago. It has been stuck on “pause” in my launchpad since then. I am unable to do anything now. IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT

Hit or Miss

Lots of reviews say it’s great and there are lots that say it isn’t. I’m sure it can be a lot of different things but I have noticed that my latop runs drastically slower since I installed the newest software. That’s my only regret with El Capitan

No Hitches

I was sort of forced to update my OS because some programs had stopped working with it. But despite the fact that my laptop is ancient, the update took a reasonable amount of time and everything went smoothly. It feels like having a new computer despite my rickety old hardware.

Good update.

Faster and more stable than yosemite. Good features. I’m only giving it 4 stars because I don’t like Jonathan’s Ive’s new design philosophy. Seriously, it was microsoft who started the trend for ugly, colourful, flat interface with ‘metro. Since when does Apple look to microsoft for design cues?

At Least the Beach Ball of Doom Is Prettier

Mail and Acrobat keep freezing and needing to quit. The best thing I can say so far is that circling beach ball is more colorful than the Yosemite version.

Horrible

I just downloaded the update on April 19th 2016 and now I cannot search the web. The only pages that open up are Apple Inc pages and iTunes. Every website that is not apple says cannot connect to server. It does not matter if I use Safari, Google Chrome, or Firefox, they are all giving the same result. This is so frustrating as I have a lot of work to do and I do not know how to uninstall to get back to the older version. My internet connection is fine the only thing that has changed is me downloading the new update. please help. Fix this thing asap.

Breaks most used application and devices

I was expecting to write a good review here after decide to take my chances on installing El Capitan in my brand new Mac Book Pro Retina. Well, the upgrade was successful but the surprises came when I tried to use my USB Audio device Fast Track Pro and also when I tried to open my so important Application Bible Study+ from Olive Tree. I am so disapointed and now I don’t know how to roll back from this bad experience I am having. Apple, what is happening to you? We could trust your quality controls and technology for so long and now you are launching OSess not compatible with so popular application and devices????

El Capitan’s “SIP” might render your apps useless.

El Capitan is like every other version OSX and works well in all basic capacities. Apple added bells and whistles, as usual. Apple also added SIP “System Integration Protection” to make a safer OSX, I guess. But SIP killed the operability of a great many of my music and audio production apps and now I’m scrambling to find a copy of OSX 8 or 9 so I can dual-boot. It is always better to move forward with software instead of hanging back... but "scramling to find alternates" is never fun. Basically, double check compatibility of your software before you upgrade, especially if you are using audio/visual production apps. Many such apps have, thus far, required root access: El Capitan will deny it to them and may limit, or end, their functionality.

Adobe Creative Suite no longer stable with El Capitan

I decided to wait a number of months before installing El Capitan…I normally don’t jump on the OS X upgrades until bugs are worked out. I’ve found that everything works so much slower in El Capitan. My Mac Pro meets and greatly exceeds all the requirements, but start-up, opening applications, etc. runs so much slower. Not happy with El Capitan at all. If I could, I would revert back to Yosemite, but the process to do so is so cumbersome and fraught with possible loss of files. As a graphic designer, I depend heavily on Adobe’s Creative Suite of applications. Since I’ve upgraded to El Capitan, I’ve had all sorts of problems with InDesign. I can be working on body copy, and it simply disappears from the screen. I have to press command+0 or command+1 to see it again. If I go to another application (Safari, Microsoft Word, etc.) when I return to InDesign, sometimes my copy is there, sometimes it isn’t. I searched a number of blogs and discovered that other people are experiencing the same thing. I’m using CS6…it’s happening on Adobe CC as well. It did seem to improve the functionality of Apple’s Mail. Under Yosemite, if I sent an email, most of the time it wouldn’t show up in the “Sent” folders, so I wan’t able to guarantee that the email was sent. Under El Capitan, all of my “Sent” files are now showing up as sent. So…props for that fix. My recommendation…DO NOT install El Capitan. I see that a beta of OS X 10.11.5 is already being tested. I just hope I can limp along well enough to get my work done and Apple gets this fixed. It could be an Adobe issue, or even my Suitcase Fusion application, but the disappearing type happens in some other applications as well.

Airdrop isn’t working!

Everything seems fine about this OS X but here unfortunately the airdrop between my iphone and my mac is not working. It is working just fine over yosemite! Not good apple. Why do you guys always have do something wrong?! why can’t it me like OS X lion or mavericks where everything worksed fine. THose are what that could be said a perfect os x

Miracle fix for an old mac mini

I went from 10.6.8 right to El Capitan with no problems whatsoever on an old Mac mini I was considering having to pitch. I could not run some of the new software I needed before, and El Capitan fixed that. It took about an hour to download from the app store, and only about 30 mins to install. Every program I use daily has had no problem with the switch— filemaker 11 (now I can upgrade to 14), pages, print shoppe, numbers, keynote. It’s like I opened up a brand new mac with all my favorite programs and data already in it.

I love it so much.

El Capitan has the same great look from Yosimite, and I just switched from a PC, best thing ever what just happened to me. I also like how when you Shake Your mouse, It will grow large on your screen so you can see your cursor, and the gestures are awesome too! I also love the fact that I can call and text people right from my computer without even reaching for my iPhone! (btw before I had El Capitan, my MacBook came installed with Moutain Lion) Overall, BEST OS EVER! I love SO MUCH! Good thing is I can run my Windows apps too. (Pst, If you wanna get Windows 10 for free without paying $120, get Windows 7 on Amazon for a cheap price, than go to windows.com after finishing Win7 install and boot camp driver installation.) I love my Macbook Pro and I will never go back!

Downloaded with trepidation: Very Impressed! Excellent OS

I have a mid 2009 MBP, 17 inch with a 500 HD (not SSD) and 8GB RAM. I was using OS 10.8 and my computer was starting to get alittle sluggish-still very usable however. I was also slowly starting to get somwwhat low on available hard disk space, with 55 GB left.. I had been keeping an eye on El Cap as different versions were released, being in no rush to even consider an upgrade. What held me back was a concern with how my aging computer would handle the new OS, and also the tepid reviews it was getting here: there were quite a number of negative reviews and horror stories. I recently saw that 10.11.4 seemed to have pretty solid reviews and decided to plunge in: I AM GLAD I DID!! The install went very smoothly-it took awhile: 30-40 minutes to download and 45-50 min to install. No problems. Following installation Photos took along time to process my iPhoto library and convert into a photos library-probably 1-1.5 hours. I can definitely say that my mid-2009 MBP is much snappier than it was with 10.8. No issues so far with any of my apps including MS Word. One surprising thing was that after the install by available HD space was substantially increased: from 55 GB to 113 GB free now. I’m not sure how that occurred but obviously its great to have the extra space. I had planned on putting in a 1TB SSD internal drive to speed things up, but will hold off for now to continue to see how my MBP performs first. Overall my impressions on day 1 are VERY POSITIVE.

Colorful Wheel of Death

Like so many others, this upgrade turned my mac into, well, a pile of junk. Anyone else notice the similarity between the new spinning color wheel and the mind eraser from the original Star Trek? Sure seems like the results are the same...
