OS X El Capitan App Reviews

1 Issue

OSX 10.11.4 is nice, but I have been having an issue with it on my 2015 Macbook Pro 13”, and that is the fact that every once and a while, my computer will freeze and become unresponsive. I have to force it to reboot, which I hate doing. Don’t know where else to report this.

Terrible

How do I uninstall this??! Every 5 minutes my computer freezes! This is so awful. Please someone, how do I remove it?

Crashed my computer

This update completely crashed my computer! My computer screen would completely freeze and my computer would be unresponsive forcing me to hard-restart. My computer wouldnt turn back on. After many tries, I finally was able to get it into recovery mode. Thankfully I had a time machine backup and I was able to completely reinstall my harddrive from the backup. My backup had Yosemite and definitely not “upgrading” to El Capitan again!!! Users Beware!

Glitches already?!

The first time I tried to download El Capitan it led me to get a new hard drive. Now that I have tried it again with the hope that there were improvements, I see why people complain about glitches. I have only had it on my computer for about two or three hours and already experiencing glitches. Starting to regret downloading and I don’t want to lose any informaton again. I don’t even think it’s worth three stars but we’ll see if that changes after the first week. Hopefully Apple decides to pay attention to the complaints and update El Captain or just make a new system upgrade that’s not glitchy.

Was nervous after reading reviews.

After reading many of the reviews I was a bit nervous about upgrading. I was running Yoseminite and was having problems with my computer forgetting it’s settings after waking from sleep. I tried several fixes but none worked. So I took the plunge and upgraded. It didn’t take long at all. Download was pretty quick and install was even faster. Since the upgrade everything is running fine. Computer seems even a bit faster. I’m very happy with it.

All well except I lost ability to Scan from my HP printer

I have just installed El Capitan and all seemed to be going very well until I tested my scanner (HP LaserJet Pro color MFP). The printer seems OK but I can no longer scan to my computer. So far I have tried deleting and reinstalling the printer, cycling power to both my Mac and Printer, installing the latest version of HP Easy Scan and no luck so far. Disappointing since this is a function I use very often. Other than this issue I have to say that my old Late 2009 iMac seems to have received a nice performance boost with this latest OS version

Actually (with a sigh of relief) it’s not too bad

I have a 21.5”, mid-2011 iMac, on which I’ve been running Mavericks 10.9.5. Due to all the negative reviews, I completely skipped Yosemite, as well as the earliest versions of El Capitan. But I knew at some point I would want to make the upgrade to El Capitan. Several months ago, in preparation, I maxed out the iMac’s memory at 16GB ram. Prior to downloading from the App Store, I emptied trash, repaired permissions, and backed up to Time Machine. The download took 16 minutes (cable modem). Installation took 1 hour-14 minutes and went without a hitch. There were five apps that I then needed to update from the App Store. I have been running El Capitan for one week, and things have been sailing along just fine. I had to make a number of adjustments to “Preferences” in several apps, and also found that adjustments were necessary in the “View” portion of pull down menus. Once I had made these minor setting changes, things looked and felt pretty normal. I also had to download and install new software and drivers for my scanner. I think that the “look” of El Capitan is just fine and it seems that overall things are running much faster. My only complaint at this point is the discontinuation of iPhotos, and it’s replacement by the new Photos app. I think Photos is a step backwards, but hopefully over time, I’ll get more used to using it. Fortunately, I have a late 2006 iMac (due to it’s age, it can’t be upgraded past Lion 10.7.5) running an older version of iPhotos which is still working just great, so there is some comfort in that. Only 4 stars because of the Photos snafu.

Good job, Apple!

We asked, you listened!!!! We finally have an update for a lot of infamous bugs(such as the Youtube crash bug)!!! Anyone who is hesitant to buy this, buy it!!! Actually good! My verdict: This is a must buy!

Photoshop CS2 Programs Are Not Supported!

This is the worst update ever! And I used to be a very loyal Apple fan, but these updates have got to go. It’s like this every year or every month. Apple comes out with a new software and it just makes things worse and worse. My computer is running so much slower now and that color wheel of death is on every page or window. Thanks Apple. This really means a lot to me. Is this how you treat your loyal customers? Now, half of my programs will not download, will not work. It’s like they want us to go out and spend more money on Adobe products. These things are not cheap. And how long will they last until the next dreaded update? Stop fixing things that don’t need to be fixed. Please, stop creating updates that kill my other programs. Stop deleting all my files. I was fine before the update. Now, I have to erase everything from my hard drive and start from scratch. Why can’t these updates be uninstalled? Why do I have to delete everything just to get the old system back, which worked fine for me. This will take me all day. Stop with the tweaking. Stop forcing everyone to update. It seems these updates are viruses than anything else.

Dang it.

I upgraded to the new software system after reading the reviews and tI thought, “Y’know what? Half of the people love it and almost half hate it. I’ll take my chances.” Big mistake. Now my computer runs much slower than it did before. :-/

Unable to install current version of El Capitan

I offered to help a friend upgrade her MBP to El Capitan from Yosemite. Unfortunately, the installer requires her to first install OS 10.11, the very first version of El Capitan. It’s no longer available online from Apple, and all the so-called “safe” sites where El Capitan OS 10.11 is allegedly stored are unreliable, slow, or both. Thus, there’s no way to upgrade to El Capitan. She’s stuck. Apple formerly kept earlier OS versions available just for this purpose. Its new policy of not doing so is essentially shooting itself in its foot.

Late 2008 Macbook runs much faster

Like most reviewers on here, I was nervous to upgrade because of all the negative reviews. But my old 2008 Macbook’s processor was getting more and more stressed from Yosemite and I was really sick of seeing the pinwheel spinning endlessly for even the smallest tasks, so I figured I had to bite the bullet and try El Capitan to see if the promised ‘under the hood upgrades’ really did help it run faster. And WOW what a difference it made! Before, content heavy websites or HD streaming would load slowly and make the computer unbearably loud, but now they are no problem and surfing the web is completely smooth! Apps are also opening much quicker - many more than twice as fast. So, for anyone with a computer as old as mine, I definitely recommend this update to breathe some new life into your device!

Working Just Fine!!!

I Had Bought The iMac 20” Mid 2007 From eBay And Just Upgraded To El Capitan 2 Days Ago And Its Working Really Good Not Sluggish Or Slow..Just Loving The Update. Thanks Apple!!

CAN NOT TELL IF IT WORKS

SINCE I HAVE WASTED OVER 4 HOURS TRYING TO DOWNLOAD AND THEN GET IT FIXED WITH ONLINE CHAT I HAVE TO SAY IT ISNT EVEN WORTH A 1. IT STILL IS NOT WORKING. I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THE LATEST IPHONE UPDATE, BUT AT LEAST IT WAS FIXED IN 1/2 HOUR.

I honestly do not see any issues with this. everything is just fine

I was very resistant on downloading this, due to the HORRIFYING reviews i read. but as a previous reviewer said, the people that actually like the update will just move on with their lives; versus the ones that had problems. which is true, because when you have a bad experience with something or somewhere…you tell the whole world about it, right?? same here. but i honestly don’t see any problems with this update. if there were problems in the past, obvioulsy they have now ironed out the kinks because my desktop works perfectly fine. it’s fast and there’s no trouble. I have a late 2013 21.5 inch desktop, but i purchased it brand new back in december of 2014. yosemite ran perfectly on my desktop as well. so after all is said and done...my thoughts on el capitan is that it is excellent. so download it, and live life.

Not for me

I use a MacBook pro early 2011, bought it new and have kept up with all updates and operating sys. This one I took out and went back to Yosemite. I didnt care for the changes made to Disk Utility and a loss of some programs that I use on a regularly. I have alway done a clean install on the new OS. Good time for some spring cleaning. To many of my old programs didnt run will or some not at all.

Great Performance on Old Mac

Running El Capitan on a 2011 Macbook Air with 4GB of RAM, zero OS related performance issues. Still cant get Airdrop to work from computer to computer (phone to computer usually works though).

Working Very Well For Me.

I just acquired a Mid 2011 iMac that still had Lion as it’s OS. I didn’t want to disturb my Mid 2011 Mac Mini, so this was a great time to try El Capitan on the iMac. I was concerned about the negative reviews here, which is one reason I didn’t upgrade the Mini. I can honestly say the installation proceeded without any problems, and El Capitan has been running smoothly and has been stable. And the iMac pretty modest architecture compared to the new powerhouse models... The only downside for me is some of my old & expensive software won’t run properly with El Capitan, which is in the software vendor’s ball park for obsoleting rather than supporting their products. I plan on making a boot drive for apps that need an older OS, and then bringing the Mac Mini up to date. I’d suggest doing your homework before upgrading. Check your critical applications for compatibility, and always make a backup. It’s a large download, so if your internet connection is wonky, then consider a visit to the Genius Bar or somewhere with stable internet.

So Far, so Good

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro. I was concerned because some reviewers say they added memory. I have the originak 4 GB. I just downloaded El Capitan last night and it seems to be working fine so far. I saved all my documents to a flash drive, and then started. This morning when I got up it had finished I thought, but I had to enter my Apple ID password 2 more times, and then some apps needed update, which took a couple hours, and then I shut it off and back on 2 times, because something was going on with slow loading and a progress bar the first two times. Finally it opened normally. One thing I dislike greatly (as with iPhone IOS) are the cheap cartoony-looking icons. The olde ones were more elegant.

Don’t. Do it.

If you have an older macbook pro. Don’t. Download. I don’t care what everyone said before me. look closer at their reviews. If they mention they had to install more ram THAT SHOULD BE A RED FLAG. This download ruined my life. I’m a college student and my laptop is everything. I chose mac because theyre reliable, fast, efficient, durable machines. Apple makes some of the best products in the world. But just how updating an iphone 4 to iOS 7 was a mistake, updating your older mac to el capitan is as well. From the day I made the switch to el capitan my computer has run at half the speed in literally every application. AND I WISH this was all that happened. The upgraded notes app takes about 5-10 minutes to open. iPhoto literally just doesnt work anymore. The wheel of death pops up ANY TIME I CLICK ANYTHING. Safari uses about a gig of ram when its left open. The new garadgeband is nice but im pretty sure you can get it without the update. Please god I KNOW you want to believe this wont happen to you TRUST ME i read ALL the same reviews before updating. But it will. It will happen to you and it will ruin your life. I have used mac for 5 years and I love them. I love apple. but Apple? screw you for this. My 1,200 dollar machine is useless. I, like you the reader, so desperetly wanted El Capitan to be amazing, and I’m sure it works AMAZING on apple’s new line of MacBooks. But it simply. doesnt. work. on the older models. If one person reads this and decides not to download than I will have succeded. Please. For yourself. For me. For humanity. Do not download El Capitan.
