Working Very Well For Me.
I just acquired a Mid 2011 iMac that still had Lion as it’s OS. I didn’t want to disturb my Mid 2011 Mac Mini, so this was a great time to try El Capitan on the iMac. I was concerned about the negative reviews here, which is one reason I didn’t upgrade the Mini.
I can honestly say the installation proceeded without any problems, and El Capitan has been running smoothly and has been stable. And the iMac pretty modest architecture compared to the new powerhouse models...
The only downside for me is some of my old & expensive software won’t run properly with El Capitan, which is in the software vendor’s ball park for obsoleting rather than supporting their products. I plan on making a boot drive for apps that need an older OS, and then bringing the Mac Mini up to date.
I’d suggest doing your homework before upgrading. Check your critical applications for compatibility, and always make a backup. It’s a large download, so if your internet connection is wonky, then consider a visit to the Genius Bar or somewhere with stable internet.
